“The Vestry and Search Committee of Emmanuel are pleased to announce that we have called our next rector, John David, “J.D.” Barnes, who will begin on August 1, 2020. We are tremendously excited about entering into this ministry partnership with Fr. Barnes and seeing what growth the Spirit has for us on our journey together as a community.”

John David, “J.D.” Barnes was born in Gadsden, Alabama, and attended the University of Alabama, where he received a Bachelor of Science in the New College. J.D. met his wife, Amanda, through a computer-oriented undergraduate research program they were both in at UA.

After some years working in the field of information systems, J.D. was accepted in the ordination process through the Diocese of Alabama and attended what is now the Seminary of the Southwest, in Austin, TX, beginning in 2003. He did his field placement work as a seminarian at St. David’s in downtown Austin and graduated with a Master of Divinity degree in 2006.

After ordination, J.D.’s first call was to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Huntsville, Alabama, where he served as the assistant to a beloved rector, soon elected as bishop suffragan. After staying through some interim transition time, J.D. was called to Trinity Episcopal Church is Demopolis, Alabama, where he has served as rector for almost 12 years.

Married for almost 24 years, J.D. and Amanda have two sons, Joseph (18) who will soon be reporting to the United States Military Academy at West Point, and Samuel (13) who will be entering high school.
