“For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.” Romans 14:8
“The death of a member of the Church should be reported as soon as possible to, and arrangements for the funeral should be made in consultation with, the Minister of the Congregation.” (Book of Common Prayer, p. 490).
Even at the news of the death of his friend Lazarus, Jesus wept. (cf. John 11:35) The loss of a loved one is a profound experience which necessitates proper grieving and reflection upon our own mortality. As a people of the Resurrection, we are filled with hope and, yet, our profound sense of loss is real. By honoring the deceased and gathering together for mutual support and encouragement, we empower the Christian community to love in the manner that Christ taught us.
